A bike adventure from the Bavarian capital to the very south of Germany – this route from Munich to Friedrichshafen connects cities, cultural landscapes and architectural gems in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. In this Collection, mediaeval market squares, fairytale castles, impressive monasteries, views of the Alps and flat cycle paths along rivers await.
This 241-kilometre (150 mi) Tour runs almost exclusively on minor roads and asphalt cycle paths, making it suitable for road bikes. With moderate gradients throughout, this five-stage Collection is suitable for beginners and seasoned long-distance cyclists alike.
Starting from Munich Central Station, you’ll cycle west past Nymphenburg Park and Blutenburg Castle. You’ll ride beside the railway line to the town of Fürstenfeldbruck and then through wide fields to the turquoise Lech river, where the first stage ends in beautiful Landsberg. On the second day, you’ll cross the Wertach valley at Türkheim and reach your destination for the day in the town of Mindelheim, which is dominated by a magnificent castle. The section on the Günztal cycle path and the Benninger Ried nature reserve are two of the highlights on the way to Memmingen on the third day of your cycle Tour.
From Memmingen, you’ll initially follow a former railway line to the Iller, where you’ll cross from Bavaria into Baden-Württemberg. Upon reaching your fourth stage destination at Obersee lake in Kißlegg, you can end the day with a refreshing swim. The last stage takes you via the town of Tettnang and across the Schussen tributary to your eagerly awaited destination, the popular Lake Constance. Your Tour ends at Friedrichshafen station, which is located directly on the lakeshore and at the harbour. Don't want to get off the bike yet? Then continue on the Lake Constance Cycle Path or take the ferry to Romanshorn in Switzerland to continue to the city of Basel.
You can choose your starting point in Munich very flexibly, as the first stage passes several railway stations. Please check beforehand whether bikes can be taken on the respective trains. The destination at Friedrichshafen station is very well connected to the international rail network.
Numerous cultural and historical buildings, such as palaces, castles and monasteries, line your route and invite you to make extensive stops. That's why I've kept the stages (apart from the first one) rather short. If you want to travel faster, it’s possible to split the route into fewer days. You won't have any problems finding accommodation on this route either.
Cycling from Munich to Lake Constance is an unforgettable experience for beginners and ambitious (racing) cyclists alike. I hope you enjoy the route.
