Coming down from Monteverde is as much challenging as going up. Yes, you are going downhill but road is bad and traffic crazy so not much enjoyment. Once I turned south on 145 traffic calmed and I could enjoy surroundings again.

Some sections of this route are very steep that I would recommend walking

It was a lovely ride. Mix of gravel and pavement, following Pacific coast. Breathtaking views and abandoned beaches.

There are few road construction sites along the route that make riding conditions a bit dusty, so if you mind, get the face mask ready.

Ride is on the hilly side so plan some extra time

Heading out of San Rafael on nice gravel, passing locals going to the work and enjoying surroundings. Early mornings are magical with all the life around you starting on daylight routine.

This day is all about climbing. First 10km will gradually worm you up for some of the biggest inclines that I did

Who said that bottle holder doesn't have multiuse. Coming back from supermarket with big papaya and no bags, you have to improvise.

This was one of the nicest rides. Quiet roads, lovely nature, many creaks to walk over.

Some of the hills are bad but nothing new in CR.

Places that I stayed overnight were

Day starts with moderate to challenging climb but after that is mostly flat. Don't get to excited, this is Costa Rica, there is always surprise around the corner.

Once you reach ruta Nacional 21 at Guardia traffic became crazy. That is the the main and only way to the Liberia. On that stretch of 17km

This day was confirmation why I bike tour. All the pain, dust in the eyes/mouth, heat, doesn't matter after day like this.

Crossing over Cabo Blanco Nacional park with untouched jungle was remarkable.

Riding along the coast with beach after beach that are only yours.

Village of Santa Teresa is very touristy

As you can see from the elevation profile, it is up and down day. Incredible views along the Pacific with acceptable amount of traffic. These are more touristy areas so expect a bit more people around you.

There is always beach just for you, keep riding, won't be long.

Junquillal area is very nice and

Today was the most challenging day of the tour.

I knew that inclines will be crazy but what I didn't expect was amount of traffic on road so small and so bad.

There is no way to beat the tourist hordes. No mater which way and how early you come, they will find you.

Cars, trucks, motorcycles come both ways

  14. While stationed in Potrero, I did this day ride to the villages in the area.

It is touristy area so be ready for some traffic. My favourite was Las Catalina's and Dante beach.

On the same day, off road triathlon took place so I could admire bravery of those crazy guys and girls.

    Happy riding!

In planning stage, based on elevation profile, I went above suggested 50km per day limit for this leg.

I made it to the destination but wasn't fun. If there was accommodation option earlier I would take it.

It's all peachy until you reach hwy35 & 733 intersection. Riding on 35 is fine, busy, but there

Lovely day ride from Liberia to the Rincon de la Vieja volcano national park. Start early as this is busy local tourist attraction. It is steady uphill but nothing crazy and it's all paved.

Once up there, you can enjoy hike in the park with some amazing views of the volcano.

For your way down take single
