The sea and mountains are the pulse of Catalonia. This marriage is tangible in the cuisine, culture and landscapes. In this Collection, we present six mountain bike loops that explore the coast and its mountains. You’ll ride through Iberian history and Catalonia’s mediaeval past, discover the mountains of the interior and explore unknown corners of the verdant Aran Valley, in the heart of the Pyrenees.
The adventures are suitable for all levels of cyclists: from a short, easy route to the Iberian village of Montbarbat, to moderate routes along the coast of Maresme and the Montnegre massif and high altitude challenges in the Pyrenees or great inland crossings between vineyards in the Priorat or Camíns de Pedra.
As the routes are circular, you can set off at any point along the way, giving you plenty of opportunities to take public transport to reach your chosen start point. You’ll pass through villages and towns en route where you can replenish your energy, refill your water bottles and immerse yourself in culture.
The routes are designed for MTB, but they’re not technically difficult. You can ride them on a front suspension bike with 29-inch wheels and tread that gives you speed. Always remember to check your bike before you set off and carry spare parts with you.
Aside from the Aran Valley (best ridden from mid-spring until early autumn), you can cycle these routes year-round. Spring and autumn, when the clear light illuminates the landscapes, are particularly beautiful. Don't forget to check the weather forecast to make sure you choose the best days.
Catalonia is well connected by land, sea and air, so it’s easy to reach the main cities and towns where these adventures start.
The Catalan landscapes that you travel through will no doubt be etched into your memory forever.
