In the heart of the Sauerland, where the Elpe and Valme rivers flow down their charming valleys to meet the Ruhr, lies the municipality of Bestwig. Bestwig, Ostwig and Welmede districts lie in the fertile Ruhr Valley, surrounded by the Sauerland mountains, enchanting panoramas and romantic valleys. You can discover these wonderful landscapes on the 56-kilometre (35 mi) Bestwiger Panorama Trail.

However, this hike has much more to offer besides the magnificent landscapes. Relics from the regino’s mining history;the Fort Fun adventure park; and the Stüppelturm tower with its stunning view of small, pretty villages with their black-and-white half-timbered houses and flower-filled gardens all lie in wait. I’ve also included a few short detours to visit specific Highlights, such as the mining museum in Ramsbeck or North Rhine-Westphalia's only natural waterfall, the Plästerlegge.

The four daily stages of this Collection are between 14 and 19 kilometres (8 and 11 mi) long and each ends in one of the small, pretty villages of the Hochsauerland. You’ll find a small selection of accommodation and refreshment stops at the stage destinations or in neighbouring villages that are within easy reach. However, remember to book in advance, as they’re often family-run and quickly booked up in the high season. Alternatively, public buses take you comfortably to the nearest train station or to your host if you want to hike the stages from a central location. Wear sturdy shoes, pack weatherproof clothing and take plenty to drink and a packed lunch, as you’ll find endless wonderful places for a picnic. Oh, and don't forget your camera.
