Of all the long-distance hiking trails marked and maintained by the Black Forest Association, the Rheinauenweg is probably the most unusual. There are no inclines and you only see the Black Forest occasionally from a distance. Instead, a world opens up to you between water and land, with shimmering blues and greens. The lush, sprawling nature along the winding streams of the Upper Rhine truly deserves its nickname ‘Baden Jungle’!
Humans have also left their mark on this environment. The original course of the Rhine no longer exists and its former arms have become isolated biotopes worthy of protection. On the other hand, new habitats have been created in the form of quarry lakes, which now provide a sanctuary for animals and plants, especially the water rat.
This hike along the Rheinauenweg is 175 kilometres (109 mi) long. I’ve deliberately designed it so that, as well as the sections through the floodplain forest as well as cultural and architectural highlights, there is plenty of swimming fun to be had. This sometimes requires small detours from the main trail, but they add a lot of value to your hike. Accordingly, the following applies to all water rats: the best time for this trail is from May to September. Please note, however, that there are bathing restrictions and check with high water times. In this case, large parts of the trail are impassable.
Technically, the seven stages of the Rheinauenweg are not very demanding. Therefore, it’s suitable for families with older children. Children can look forward to the bathing fun, informative nature trails and possibly a day at Europa Park.
That said, the average 25 kilometres (16 mi) of walking per stage should not be underestimated. Leave your heavy hiking boots at home and instead opt for light shoes or even hiking sandals. Otherwise, you’ll soon get some unpleasant blisters on the long, flat paths in the warm, humid climate. When exploring the nature reserves in particular, you should change from swimwear to light long trousers and protect uncovered skin with mosquito spray.
The starting point in Kehl and the destination in Weil am Rhein are easy to reach by train. However, if you want to shorten the route or end the Tour early, you usually have to use the local bus lines. Otherwise, the rhombus with the blue waves (and komoot, of course) will reliably show you the way. You’ll find accommodation in almost all towns at the end of the stages, but spaces are often limited, so be sure to reserve in advance. Only in Wyhl is it difficult, but in neighbouring Endingen there are several hotels.
So I wish all water rats and jungle dwellers a splashing good time!
