India is a crazy and absolutely wild country. If you are into real adventures, India definitely belongs on your bucket list! India is special: for the road situation, "busy" is a huge understatement. You simply must have seen how Indian "coordinated chaos" works. People are curious and open-minded - maybe a bit rustic here and there. Especially when it comes to accommodations, you can't be picky. India is a country you hate or love. Life in India is surprising, rustic, colorful and very, very fascinating!
In the extreme northeast you will find the province "West Bengal" with its very touristic city Darjeeling. There is also the huge Singalila ridge between India and Nepal - a fantastic place!
We took the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway to get to Darjeeling, which was a real adventure. The railroad was built between 1879 and 1881 by the British colonial government. It runs through the mountains and in the towns right along the roadside. It feels like you can reach out of the window directly into the many small stores. The railroad overcomes a difference in altitude of over 2,000 meters in 86 kilometers! The route with twelve stations leads over 554 bridges and promises incredible views of the seemingly endless landscape of West Bengal.
We took our bikes on the train, but I wouldn't recommend replicating that: It was a huge chaos! The train has only two carriages and absolutely no room for luggage. Your best bet is to pack the bike in a bag and buy an extra seat or two. What I highly recommend is traveling with locals. By my side was Indian mountain biker Vinay Menon. He told me endless stories about the country on the long train ride.
Have you got a taste for visiting this area or any other place in India by mountain bike? Then you should contact Mike Mc Lean with his tour operator "MTB Kerela". Just write him an email: mtbkerala@gmail.com. Alone I would have been here really reluctant. There are a lot of things to consider, especially on the last stages of our trip.
For the breathtaking trails on the Singalila ridge you need a permit and a local guide. Mike can organize both for you. Up here you will stay in rustic shelters up to 3,500 meters above sea level. I can recommend you a good sleeping bag.
I hope you feel inspired by this collection. I can really recommend it: This trip was an unforgettable mountain bike trip!

All'inizio i sentieri erano super definiti e ripidi/tecnici in alcuni punti.
