The Panorama Trail 100 in the Schladming-Dachstein region of Styria in Austria lives up to its name. Hiking along well-maintained paths where no alpine experience is required, you experience impressive views over the mighty Dachstein massif, the second-highest mountain in the Northern Limestone Alps. Although Schladming is primarily known as a winter sports resort, the region has plenty to offer in the warmer seasons too.
The Panorama Trail 100 leads 75 miles (120 km) on either side of the Enns River. The circular hike leads along the riverbank and up into the hills above the valley. In this Collection, we split the trail into seven stages, but of course, you can complete the route in more or fewer days as you prefer.
The section to the left (north) of the Enns River leads below the impressive peaks of the Dachstein Massif, over the Ramsau Plateau, along the Gröbminger Valley Basin, and from the Mitterberg to the small village of Öblarn. There, at the end of the third stage, you change to the southern bank of the Enns. On the other side, you hike through the 4-Mountain Ski Area (Reiteralm, Hochwurzen, Planai, and Hauser Kaibling) and visit picturesque places like Untertal, Haus im Ennstal, or Michaelerberg.
The Panorama Trail 100 starts and ends in Mandling, a mountain village easily reached by regional train. There are good public transport connections along the Tour, for example in Pruggern or Öblarn, so you can plan your hike flexibly. For more information, see: oebb.at/en
Each night, you arrive in a place with a good choice of accommodation to suit any budget. However, on the fourth stage, you spend the night on the mountain at the Michaelerberghaus. You should reserve a bed here in advance. Local tourism associations offer overnight stays in comfortable accommodation as well as a luggage transport service from hotel to hotel.
