Impressive summit crosses and alpenglow are normally only associated with southern Germany. But this isn’t always the case. The Alps in central Germany come alive with colour in the evenings too. Here, you don’t even have to climb a 3,000-metre (9,840 ft) peak to reach a summit cross and conquer a decent amount of altitude. It may come as a surprise, but we’re talking about the lowlands around Leipzig and Halle that extend all the way to the Saale and Dessau. We’ve picked out seven unique Tours that take you up high and showcase the region’s special treasures.
In the Brachwitz Alps, you discover landscapes that were formed long before our time. You encounter the first mountains of your adventure here. Volcanic rock, so-called porphyry, paints the hills around Wettin in rich red tones, while the rock faces on the banks of the Saale River reach for the sky. The vineyard region around Bad Kösen is lush green and pinkish-purple: the meadows burst in colour thanks to the numerous orchid species. This Collection also includes a visit to the most important archaeological excavation site of the last century. A hike to the Mittelberg takes you to the legendary Nebra Sky Disk where you can admire the futuristic Ark.
In the middle of the Planitz Forest, you find beautiful relics of former quarries: lakes surrounded by rocky walls resemble volcanic craters, their waters beautiful shades of blue and turquoise. Just to the south of Leipzig, you discover their bigger brothers such as the New Geyersberg mountain. Forest lovers will feel right at home in the Dahlener Heide, which is crisscrossed by small streams – a paradise for hikers.
To help you to really switch off, all Tours are accessible by public transport. You can use the Vebundticket on all regional trains, S-Bahns or buses to get out of the city and into nature. This way, you skip the traffic jam, the search for a parking space and a journey back to your car. Public transport is very convenient.
