Stage 2 is a wonderful walk around the Kent Estuary to Grange-over-Sands, with plenty of wildlife on display and some lovely scenery. Levens Hall and its incredible topiary garden make for a splendid detour.

There is an alternative to this route across the mudflats and sands during a low tide. However, this is a dangerous option due to the fast-rising tides and quicksands. It should only be attempted with a local guide.

You begin by following a former railway track bed towards the hamlet of Sandside, with great views north to Lakeland on a clear day. The Coniston group, Langdale Pikes and Fairfield all poke up above the intervening hills beyond the Kent Estuary, as well as the Kentmere peaks: the very source of the river itself.

You pass the busy little village of Milnthorphe, cross the River Belah and continue to Levens Hall, where a café stop is highly recommended. If you’ve got some spare time, the parkland alongside the river to the north east is glorious.

After Levens, you loop back around the head of the estuary, crossing the River Kent and its tributary, the Gilpin. Follow the shoreline south, with Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve on your right. Keep your eyes out for its nesting ospreys taking to the skies in summer. Finally, the route takes you through fields and the village of Meathop, before arriving at the promenade at Grange-over-Sands.

A range of accommodation options await you in Grange-over-Sands, as well as woodland lodges at nearby Meathop. The train station can take you back to where you came or onwards to the likes of Ulverston and Barrow.
