Rolling fields as far as the eye can see, wildlife-rich marsh landscapes and plenty of cosy rest stops along the way – the Frisian Army Trail (Friesischer Heerweg) is a spectacular bike Tour through the heart of East Frisia, in north-west Germany. On flat paths lined with flocks of sheep, you’ll experience idyllic Frisian brick villages and the rugged beauty of the north of Lower Saxony from your bike.
Travelling by bike close to the coastline of the Wadden Sea on the Frisian Army Trail means breathtaking views, spellbinding nature and abundant wildlife-spotting opportunities. Emden, Sande and Oldenburg, some of the most beautiful towns in the north, are right on your route and afford the opportunity to wander through beautiful old towns and striking harbours.
From Oldenburg harbour in Friesland over to the East Frisian town of Emden on Dollart Bay and back east again to Jade Bay, you’ll cover a total of 308 kilometres (191 mi) on the trail. In this Collection, however, I’ve extended the long-distance cycle route to 323 kilometres (201 mi) to make a few detours to stops worth seeing. I’ve divided the route into five stages of between 57 and 70 kilometres (35 - 43 mi), allowing you to cover the route in typical Frisian comfort, taking frequent breaks in lovely tearooms and exploring along the way.
The Frisian Army Trail is a loop that starts and finishes at the railway station in Oldenburg, so you can easily travel without a car. If you don't want to ride the whole route, there are always opportunities to shorten the Tour and return home by train.
Regardless of the season, you should always be prepared for a change in the weather and pack waterproofs in addition to your normal cycling outfits. At the stage destinations, you’ll find several accommodation options. You can eat along the way and at your stage destinations in restaurants, cafés and snack bars. Of course, you can also stock up on snacks for the road at grocery shops.
