Winter offers the chance to engage in sports impossible during other seasons, especially if they involve snow and ice. While some people think snowy mountains are a paradise, others find winter an ordeal and aren’t a fan of donning multiple layers just to step outside.
Belonging to the latter group, I decided to escape winter this year with a getaway to the Canary Islands, where temperatures never dip below 15 degrees and bikinis see more use than jackets. Time to don your sunglasses and leave your leggings in the wardrobe.
In this Collection, I share my itinerary across Fuerteventura from the port of Corralejo to Morro Jable. Additionally, you'll find hidden gems and helpful tips, especially if you're travelling with a dog.
Fuerteventura is renowned for its extensive golden sandy beaches, impressive volcanic landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. If you're fond of exciting challenges, this adventure is just for you. The diverse terrain showcases canyons, plains, and gentle hills, which offer views of every curve and fold of the land. Moreover, the arid, desert landscape creates a surreal moon-like feeling. It's truly astonishing!
The island boasts a network of trails and roads leading to its most remote corners, where you'll uncover picturesque towns, spectacular viewpoints, and unique nature reserves. When designing each stage, I considered the wind patterns to minimise their impact. Fuerteventura can be very windy, and the island’s a well-known haven for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing for good reason. Along the route, I've combined sections of the Natural Trails network, La Gran Guanche, local dirt tracks, and peaceful secondary roads.
One of the island's perks is the ability to traverse serene routes with minimal traffic or crowds. Additionally, there's a plethora of secluded natural spots where you can spend the night, sometimes alongside vans and caravans, and at other times, in complete solitude.
I hope this route inspires you to go on your own adventure. Without further ado, let the action begin!
