Referred to as the ‘UK’s waterland National Park’, the Broads’ blend of scenic wetland, stunning wildlife, charming villages and beguiling heritage makes it one of Britain’s most wonderful places to explore on foot. With over 60 broads (open areas of water), seven rivers and over 30 nature reserves, there’s so much to discover.
This is undoubtedly one of England’s greatest regions for wildlife lovers. Many of the nation’s rarest and most coveted species inhabit or annually migrate to the region. Spring sees an explosion of colour that lasts well into the summer months, during which time the iconic swallowtail butterfly flutters between the wildflowers. Autumn brings deep oranges and earthy hues in the woodlands, while winter sees marsh harries, hen harriers and merlins, among others, in its huge, open skies.
The Broads’ history is just as rich. Walking here gives you a unique insight into how industry shaped the landscape. The broads themselves are human-made waterways created by peat digging, a major endeavour in medieval times. Trade along the rivers and channels dates back to Roman times, while today, many people enjoy exploring the waterways by boat. Dotted throughout the landscape, the enchanting windmills – some ruined, others restored – once ground corn and flour or provided drainage for the surrounding grazing marshes.
Other eye-catching reminders of the region’s past include the impressive Bungay Castle, seat of the Bigod family following the Norman Conquest, and the spellbinding remains of St Benet’s Abbey, interestingly the only monastic site in England that wasn’t officially closed down by Henry VIII.
In this Collection, we present six of the finest walks in the Broads National Park. Explore the majesty of RSPB Rockland Marshes’ reedbeds and grazing marshes. Revel in the Norman history of Bungay Castle and the picturesque countryside along the River Waveney. Step back in time at Toad Hole Cottage Museum, and marvel at the monastic splendour of St Benet’s Abbey. Discover the enchanting Upton Broad and Marshes nature reserve and its unrivalled wealth of dragonfly species. Ascend to the tower of St Helen’s Church in Ranworth for a beautiful panorama taking in much of the Northern Broads. Unwind on a loop in the Bure Valley, starting from pretty Coltishall, with the chance of walking alongside a steam locomotive – these are just some of the experiences on offer.
The loops range in length from 3.4 to 6.6 miles (5.5 to 10.7 km) and, as is to be expected in the Broads, are flat throughout. This means all kinds of hikers can enjoy these walks. There’s always somewhere to grab a hot beverage or a bite to eat, too, either at the start or during your walk. Sun protection is vital during the warmer months, while spare layers won’t go amiss in winter and the shoulder seasons. Rain can fall any time of year, so waterproofs are a good idea, as is waterproof hiking footwear.
Some of the routes are accessible by public transport, while others require a car. There’s no shortage of places to stay in the Broads, with everything from campsites to luxurious hotels on land to boat-based accommodation on the region’s many waterways.
