Gigantic limestone rock walls, rushing rivers carving through rugged terrain, spectacular ascents to peaks nearly 1,800 metres (5,905 ft) high, and nature eager to welcome you. You’ll find all of this and more in the southwest of the province of Albacete. More specifically, the region known as Sierra de Alcaraz, where you'll find the mountain range of the same name, part of the Prebaetic System of mountain ranges.
I propose a seven-day journey that takes you to truly beautiful and less crowded corners. It's perfect for a mountain escape, where you'll immerse yourself in the tranquillity of nature, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. The best part is that you might only have mobile coverage in inhabited areas; the perfect solution for a complete disconnect.
Except for the fourth night, which is spent in a campsite, every other night offers the option of sleeping indoors in a hostel or a refuge. You can use a bivvy bag if you'd rather not carry a tent. This way, you'll carry less weight, and your legs will thank you. You'll pass through towns where resupply is possible, although there are long stretches in the mountains where it's practically impossible. Make sure to always have some snacks and enough water for the day. I'll provide more details in the Tour description of each stage.
The best time to visit is spring, when the landscape is adorned with millions of different shades, animal life renews, rivers flow at their highest, and temperatures become more pleasant. Autumn is another good option, but the days start to shorten, and storms may catch you by surprise. During summer, the sun is scorching, and in winter, you may find snow at the highest altitudes. Whatever your favourite season, make sure to check the weather forecast before leaving home.
The route consists of forest paths, trails and other mountain paths. However, you'll have some brief respites on paved tracks and quiet roads to catch your breath. You'll accumulate quite a bit of elevation gain, as the itinerary navigates through the wildest corners of the range, so good mountain fitness is essential to fully enjoy this experience.
You'll spend long days on the bike and face challenging ascents, along with some technical sections. I recommend using a bike with comfortable geometry that's easy to handle on tricky terrain. Perhaps a gravel bike with wide tyres or a mountain bike with suspension might be your best choice.
Albacete is the city you'll pass through between Madrid and the Mediterranean coast. It's very well-connected, both by bus and train. Regardless of your preference, I’d advise booking your ticket in advance. Be sure to secure a space for your bike, as these are limited.
Now, it's time to discover the incredible corner of the Sierra de Alcaraz in La Mancha. Safe travels!
