The Barbarossa Cycle Route leads you along the northern edge of the Palatinate Forest from Glan to the Rhine, in eastern Germany. It brings you closer to the beauty of the Palatinate, the vastness of the Palatinate Forest and the slopes of the German Wine Route. Of course, it also takes you past the places where Red Beard worked.
Red beard is also the inspiration for the logo of the cycle path, so his face accompanies you on the red signposts from Glan-Münchweiler in the North Palatinate Mountains to Worms on the Rhine. The route is quite flat, but you can still expect a few short climbs. You'll rarely have to share the road with cars because the route mostly follows low-traffic roads, cycle paths and natural paths. Therefore, the Tour isn’t possible with a racing bike, but a gravel or trekking bike is recommended.
On the way, you’ll not only explore Barbarossa but also enjoy the natural beauty of the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine plain. You cycle past many lakes and meadows where you can take long breaks in idyllic surroundings. I’ve included a detour to Kaiserslautern because you shouldn’t miss the remains of the imperial palace built by Barbarossa. On the second day, you'll gradually leave the Palatinate and can treat yourself to a break at the House of the German Wine Route. The Nibelungen Museum awaits at your destination in Worms. Here, you can also extend your trip on the Rhine Cycle Route if two days on the bike aren’t enough for you.
The best way to get to the start is by train. You can reach both Glan-Münchweiler and Worms by train, and your overnight stop Enkenbach-Alsenborn also has a rail connection. If you want to do the Tour in a slightly different way, Kaiserslautern is also a possible starting point or destination. Have fun!
