The East Devon Trail (EDT) is a 115-mile (185 km) bikepacking route through East Devon, a rural and coastal landscape between the county's capital of Exeter and the neighbouring counties of Dorset and Somerset. Original route collection is here:
komoot.com/collection/1326720/east-devon-trail-wildlife-spotting-from-coast-to-countryIt showcases this magnificent, and too often overlooked part of Devon, which will astound you with the sheer variety of habitats, from freshwater marshes to lowland heath, green agricultural field networks, steep cliffs, pebbled beaches and sleepy woodland. It's no accident that the East Devon Trail is punctuated by a number of nature reserves, which encourage riders to pause a while. Binoculars are a must on the packing list, and handy guides at the reserves and hides often give you lots of information of what to look for and when, not to mention the friendly locals. These nature reserves are shown on the Collection map below as Highlights, although it's worth remembering that the abundant wildlife in East Devon is certainly not limited to these.Bikepackers will be pleased to hear that culinary delights abound on the East Devon Trail, with plentiful places to restock on delicious, locally produced food and drink. No East Devon Trail would be complete without a Devonshire Cream Tea (just remember, cream first), and you can also enjoy fish and chips wrapped in paper on the beach, Exe Estuary mussels, delicious ice creams from nearby herds, local ales from Otter and Lyme Breweries, or wine produced at Lyme Bay.Accessibility is really important, so rail is an easy way to reach the East Devon Trail, with our SITW basecamp just a 30 min ride from the station. For overnight stays, there are a number of great campsites in East Devon, as well as a YHA at Beer and many gorgeous guesthouses, bed and breakfasts and independent hotels. Unfortunately, wild camping without the landowner's permission is not permitted in England, but there are some really great options at Nearly Wild Camping. If you enjoy the East Devon Trail and our SITW Rally, we'd really appreciate you considering making a donation to Force Cancer Charity and/or the Devon Wildlife Trust.Find out more at eastdevontrail.com
