City, country, river – the Bavaria-Bohemia long-distance cycling trail takes you through quaint little towns, beautiful landscapes with magnificent views and along idyllic rivers. This adventure is framed by forest – the Bohemian Forest, Fichtelgebirge Mountains and the Upper Palatinate Forest lie en route. My version of this adventure is 544 kilometres (338 mi) long with 5,750 metres (18,864 ft) of climbing. The original route is 521 kilometres (323 ft) long, but I’ve included a few detours.
The route was founded by EUREGIO EGRENSIS, a cross-border association that promotes exchanges in the region. The colourful green-white-red-blue striped logo waymarks the German side, but you won’t find signage on the Czech side so you’ll need to rely on your komoot navigation.
What makes this route so interesting? You spend several days hiking through the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic. You push your limits, climbing between 700 and 1,000 metres (2,300 to 3,280 ft) up steep hills everyday. Therefore, it’s important to have the right bike. A heavy mountain bike makes it more challenging and a road bike isn’t suitable on the unpaved roads. A touring bike with off-road tyres and mountain-appropriate gears is ideal. This lets you have a lot of fun on this adventure.
I’ve divided the Collection into eight stages and made sure that you always find accommodation at the stage destinations. Since some of the towns and villages are small, you should book your accommodation before your trip, so as not to have an unpleasant surprise in the evening. I’ve also included small detours away from the main route, but I point these out in the stage descriptions.
On the way, there is something for everyone. There are small towns with beautiful marketplaces, as well as the Czech spa town of Mariánské Lázně with its buildings and historic parks. You can enjoy great views over the Fichtelgebirge Mountains and the Upper Palatinate Forest, along with idyllic river valleys with inviting floodplains. And of course, there are many places to rest and take a break that offer more than just a bench with a table. I wish you a lot of fun riding between the borders.
