The district of Göppingen, to the northwest of the Swabian Alb, is still relatively undiscovered by bicycle tourists. Here, a unique natural landscape begins that is popularly known as the ‘Swabian Grand Canyon’. Poet Eduard Mörike described it in his poetry as the ‘wondrous blue wall’. The landscape he was referring to is called the Albtrauf. Here, rugged valleys lead in one direction and isolated mountains and plateaus extend in the other. Crowned by castles and ruins from the Staufer dynasty, the region gives you a glimpse into the world gone by.
If you would like to travel back in time through the Alb foothills, then this Collection is for you. We present nine wonderfully varied bike Tours that offer a good mixture of impressive landscapes and interesting history. We kick things off with two completely accessible Tours, ideal for specialist bikes and people with reduced mobility. These routes are also ideal for families with children.
Afterwards, your adventures continue through the orchards and meadows of the Alb foothills. These Tours focus on enjoyment. Along the routes, you can stop off at various farm stores that offer delicious regional products and refreshments. In the land of the Staufers and as you ride over the ridges of the Schurwald wooded mountain range, the Tours become gradually more and more challenging. Here, you cycle over the hills rather than around them. Your extra effort is rewarded with fabulous views over the foothills of the Alb, the Three Kaiser mountains and the Alb ridge.
Two more great Tours await you in the Filstal valley. You’ll clock up kilometres as you follow leisurely paths downhill along the river. It’s worth planning a whole day for these Tours as there’s a lot to discover on the way. The crowning glory is the Albtrauf route which breaks both the 100 kilometre (62 mile) and 1,000 metre (3,280 feet) elevation gain limits.
You can get to the start and finish points of the Tours with public transport. Most of the towns in the region are well connected to the railway network and easy to reach via Stuttgart. During the summer season, the RadWanderBus in Göppingen district also takes you to some remote destinations. You can find more information on arrival and departure times in the Tour descriptions.
