The third and last stage of this variant of the BahnRadweg Hessen takes you along various rivers to Bad Hersfeld. First you follow the Lauter to the castle town of Schlitz. In this small town there is a lookout tower from which you can look into the Rhön when the visibility is good.It continues for a few kilometers along the beautiful Schlitz to its confluence with the Fulda. From now on you always cycle next to the Fulda to Bad Hersfeld.Today's route is a nice end to the bike tour, because apart from a few tiny climbs in between, it always goes slightly downhill. You will also pass through many small towns and inns that invite you to linger and take care of your physical well-being.The stage destination Bad Hersfeld is a spa town with extensive wellness offers. So if you need a bit of relaxation after the bike tour, you've come to the right place. Otherwise, Bad Hersfeld enchants with over 200 listed buildings that give the city its special charm. If you don't want to go back to the starting point in Hanau by bike, you can simply take the train from Bad Hersfeld.

It starts from Birstein today. You cycle along the Reichenbach and past the large Hohberg. The route always leads slightly uphill, which is why you can enjoy the impressive view that these meters of altitude bring with them. Finally you will reach the highest point of the volcano bike path. There is an inn to rest here, where you can gather new strength. From this point you can look forward to a pleasant bike tour with long descents through Hesse's beautiful fields and meadows. Shortly before Lauterbach you drive past Schloss Eisenbach, which you can visit from the outside. In Lauterbach you have the option to stay the night to tackle the third and last stage to Bad Hersfeld or to take the train from Lauterbach Nord station.

With this variant of the BahnRadweg Hessen it goes from Hanau eastwards via Wächtersbach to Birstein. Here, too, you can look forward to beautiful nature on the first stage. It goes along the Kinzig, past beautiful lakes and wide meadows. In between you even have the opportunity to see real water buffalo - in the middle of Hesse.About 14 kilometers before the stage destination, the route leads you through the small but fine town of Wächtersbach. The pretty place with half-timbered houses is ideal for resting, after all, there is also a small brewery in addition to restaurants. Freshly strengthened, you can then tackle the last section to Birstein, which has a crisp ascent for you at the end.The resort of Birstein offers you a lot of accommodation options so that you can continue your journey relaxed the next day. If you only want to drive this one stage, you have the option of leaving by bus. In summer from the beginning of May to the end of October you can take your bike with you on the Vulkan-Express buses on weekends and public holidays.

The last stage of the BahnRadweg Hessen takes you from Geisa to Bad Hersfeld. Similar to yesterday, the route has a big slope ready for you. Before that, however, you first drive along the idyllic Ulster to Philippsthal, where you can visit the castle and have a rest. Then it goes a few kilometers along the Werra. After you have crossed it, today's ascent begins. Once at the top, you can look forward to a long descent, on which you can roll almost to the stage destination in Bad Hersfeld.Bad Hersfeld is not only the destination of today's tour, but the end point of the BahnRadweg Hessen. Before you go home by train, for example, it is definitely worth taking a short sightseeing tour in the spa and festival city. And if you feel like you want to do something good for yourself after five stages on the BahnRadweg Hessen, Bad Hersfeld is the place for you, because there is a wide range of wellness options here. From beautiful Fulda we continue to Geisa today. This stage of the BahnRadweg Hessen first leads you past the beautiful Bieberstein Castle, which you can see enthroned from the bike path high up on its hill. After about half of the route, a considerable climb awaits you, which leads through the 1,173-meter-long Milseburg tunnel just before the highest point. Behind the summit you can look forward to a very long descent on the Milseburgtalweg, which is the former railway line of the Biebertalbahn. The stage destination Geisa, like almost all small towns in Hesse, has a few small castles to offer as attractions. A visit to the Point-Alpha Border Museum, which was a US observation base that played an important role in the Cold War, is also recommended. In Geisa there are also accommodation options in the form of hotels, guest houses and holiday apartments. If you prefer to leave, you can take the bus towards Bad Salzungen, for example, and continue from there by train. You can find more information at vgwak.de.

Today a particularly beautiful route from Lauterbach to Fulda awaits you, which goes pleasantly downhill right at the beginning. There are no particular challenges on the rest of the route either, as it goes up and down moderately. So it is ideal for enjoying the Hessian hinterland while relaxing cycling. After the first 14 kilometers you will pass a bicycle rest stop, one of the many rest stops that the well-designed infrastructure of the BahnRadweg Hessen offers for cyclists. But that's not the only highlight of this route. In Schlitz you can look forward to pretty half-timbered houses and castles. You also have the opportunity to view the place from above from the back tower. The destination of today's stage is Fulda. Here you can of course see many other sights in addition to the castle park with its beautiful orangery. In the city of Fulda you have access to local and long-distance trains if your tour ends here, and of course a very large selection of overnight accommodations if you continue on the BahnRadweg.

Today's route is a bit shorter than the last stage. Nevertheless, you can look forward to a few meters in altitude that have to be mastered. The first 14 kilometers lead you to the highest point of the Vulkanradweg, which is part of the BahnRadweg Hessen. An inn is waiting for you upstairs, inviting you to rest and stop by.Then the rest of the day is relaxed downhill past sights such as the old watermill in Illbeshausen and Eisenbach Castle. The destination of the stage is the city of Lauterbach. Here you can either spend the night in one of the countless accommodations and recharge your batteries for the next stage or take the train from Lauterbach Nord train station.
