A fun gravel ride without even leaving the city? No problem in Leipzig. Just planned the route after work, got on my bike and headed into the floodplain forest. Convenient when it’s only five minutes away.

First I headed south; no tour of the floodplain forest is complete without a loop around lake Cossi. On the way to the lake shore, the tires rumble across rough gravel paths and muddy forest trails (fenders work wonders here), arrived at the lake you are spoiled with the finest asphalt.

Accordingly, it quickly heads once down south and - on again rumbly paths - over to Markkleeberger See. It is only briefly visited, before it goes over mown stubble fields uphill to the former landfill Leinestraße. With 162 meters one of the highest points of the city, thanks to renaturation a pretty steep gravel climb to the “summit”. At the top there I had the required cup of tea.

Sitting up again, it’s similarly bumpy and equally steep downhill. On sometimes narrow paths and - in the evening empty - park ways it goes back to the floodplain forest and with a small detour over roads to the bank of the Elster flood basin. Alternating between asphalt and rough gravel, the trail heads north into the Burgaue. Here the path is covered with the finest mud and deep puddles - no mudguards will save your ass here.

On the way back, it’s still up on the landfill Jahnstraße and straight on a gravel forest path back to Plagwitz.

Conclusion: Six points on the bingo card checked off, new corners in the Auwald discovered and in beautiful autumn weather three hours spent on the bike.

The “Orange Beech Leaf” route offers you the full variety of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Grumsiner Forest on a 10-kilometer stretch: Towering giant trees, creaking dead wood, hidden forest lakes and rustling beech leaves. At the end of the tour, the bathing area at the nearby Wolletzsee also attracts visitors.
