Stage six covers around 62 miles (100 km) from the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons at Libanus through the spectacular, but lesser known Cambrian Mountains.

You’ll warm up very quickly with a sharp rise out of the village, over the moorland doubletrack and down the other side, crossing the River Usk and then following the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park heading west.

Pass through Trecastle before joining the eerily peaceful Tirabad military road, a solitary stretch of perfect tarmac across the moorland and fields as part of the military training base.

Follow the road through the village of Tirabad and into the Town of Llanwrtyd Wells - famous as the home of Man vs Horse and the World Alternative Games. Do go for something to eat or drink in the Neuadd Arms Hotel, and admire the photos, medals and trophies on the wall from this remarkable place!

Leave the town and head deep into the hills via a zig-zagging gravel road climb leading over the Llyn Brianne, a man-made reservoir with a fantastic gravel road that contours around the shores. Follow this north past the most remote chapel in Wales, Capel Soar Y Mynydd, and then take the gravel forest roads through Moel Prysgau down to Strata Florida, a wickedly fast gravel road descent.

You’ll finish the stage in Pontrhydfendigaid, where there’s a village shop and two pubs to choose from as well as a campsite here and in Ffair Rhos to the north. If you’d like to experience a very plush bothy, head to Claerddu Bothy to the north east, off the route but well worth a visit if you’ve still got the legs!
