In a constant flirt with the language border, the Transbelgica links the French-Belgian with the Belgian-Dutch border. This route offers a unique variety of single track, gravel and dirt trails in an ever-changing scenery across rural Belgium.
It's no secret that Belgians have a deeply rooted passion for cycling. This rich heritage comes to life on a route designed to touch on many aspects of its history. From the cobbled monuments of the Tour of Flanders to the small winding roads connecting villages, chapels, traditional farmhouses and castles. The Transbelgica gives a glimpse of the peaceful and diverse countryside in Flanders’ and Wallonia’s borderlands.
While there is a fair amount of paved roads in the area, you’ll be surprised to find yourself riding plenty of dirt too. Traverse the cobbles and steep hills in the Flemish Ardennes, discover the rolling landscapes in Pajottenland, wind your way through the lush forests surrounding Brussels and experience the Haspengouw region with its seemingly never ending hollow roads cutting through farmlands. All of which are connected by a maze of different trail systems.
In a seemingly flat area, the sequence of steep short climbs will challenge your climbing gears! A good bakery, ‘friterie’ and craft beer are always in reach. With plenty of resupply options, rest assured to count on a tasty post-ride treat.
The route is designed for gravel riding primarily, yet it lends itself well for mountain biking too in case you are seeking comfort over speed. Be aware that the rideability of the route is weather dependent and farmlands will get very muddy when it rains a lot. The route is rideable year-round but does itself best justice from late spring to early autumn.
The Transbelgica makes for a beautiful impression of the Belgian countryside and offers a challenge for both the experienced and beginner bikepacker. The route can be ridden both ways, with start and finish points connected by train stations for easy accessibility.
