The Mull of Galloway holds the title of Scotland's southernmost point. Situated at the tip of the Rhins of Galloway, a double-headed peninsula that's often likened to a hammerhead shark, it’s a bastion of wild tranquillity that extends into the Irish Sea.
This journey explores an unspoiled paradise of moors, hills and ocean. It’s been referred to as one of the best-kept secrets in the UK and is the perfect trail for discovering the true beauty of South West Scotland.
Thanks to a naturally milder climate, the area boasts a rich variety of plants and trees, with many gardens showcasing unexpectedly exotic flora, including Ardwell Gardens, which you’ll visit on this route.
The trail begins in the Mull of Galloway near the seaside village of Drummore. The village is the most southern in Scotland and even extends beyond English locales such as Carlisle and Newcastle. Take a peek around the Mull of Galloway lighthouse before setting off and embrace the challenge of climbing 115 steps – your efforts will be rewarded with epic views that stretch across Scotland, Ireland, Cumbria and the Isle of Man.
From Drummore, the route takes you north along the eastern coastline of the Rhins. At first, you'll follow a clifftop footpath before descending into farmland and woodland. Enjoy breathtaking views of Luce Bay, and keep a lookout for dolphins, porpoises, seabirds, and seals that inhabit the clear waters and open skies.
The path follows the coastline past the well-loved Sandhead Beach and then heads inland for a cross-country leg to Stranraer. Enjoy a picturesque stroll along the shores of Loch Ryan before the final ascent, culminating at the finish line in Glenapp.
To reach the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse by car, drive directly to the starting point and park for free. If relying on public transport, catch the 407 bus from Stranraer to Drummore. Keep in mind that the bus stops 5 miles (3 km) north of the starting point, so starting from there means skipping the initial part of the walk. When you reach the end point at Glenapp Kirk, the best option is to catch the 358 bus back to Stranraer. Stranraer is well-connected with a train station and ferry terminal serving Northern Ireland.
The route is relatively flat and can be completed by anyone with some hiking experience and a reasonable level of fitness. Be mindful that some segments of the route require walking on the road, so exercise caution. But, given the quiet nature of these roads, it shouldn't pose too much of an issue. Bring a good pair of hiking boots and a waterproof, as with any Scottish hike. And don’t forget to pack sunscreen.
