Visiting a country leaves memories that are sometimes insignificant, but are often indelible. When I went to Poland for the first time, I was surprised by the incredible number of storks that can be seen there. Before making this trip, I naively thought that Alsace, in France, was the only place where these elegant waders lived.
Poland has a painful but fascinating history. Despite the destruction wrought by war, the country's architectural heritage is on par with that of its neighbours to the west. The Second World War and its upheavals erased many of the country's multicultural characteristics. However, there are still many traces, which can only be fully appreciated by slow exploration, as is the case when travelling by bike.
The Green Velo Szlack is Poland's longest cycle route. It covers more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) of its eastern flank and links the town of Końskie to the city of Gdańsk. It's an ideal route for bike touring that will also delight gravel enthusiasts. Almost a third of the route is on tracks.
The second part of this Polish adventure leaves the dense forest of Białowieża and its bison to reach the shores of the Baltic Sea, at the city of Elblag. In this Collection, I’ve divided 811 kilometres (504 mi) over ten stages that cross splendid natural parks populated by moose and many other wild animals. Once you've reached the far north of Poland, the Green Velo Szlack heads west, following the border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. In doing so, you'll discover beautiful cities such as Lidzbark Warmiński and Gołdap. The particularly beautiful region of the Masurian Lakes is also yours to explore. This adventure ends by the sea, which, after all those forests crossed, gives it an undeniable charm.
This route was designed in 2013 and completed in 2017. There are more than 230 service points along the route, including numerous large shelters for bivouacking out of the rain, as well as 30 bicycle bridges and footbridges. All these facilities ensure you avoid roads and traffic as much as possible. There’s a wide range of accommodation en route, from farmhouses and campsites to B&Bs and small hotels, not forgetting a few manor houses.
The country's culinary heritage is infinite and is the result of a huge intermingling of populations. In the Podlasie region, you'll find Polish, Tatar, Lithuanian, Belarusian and Jewish influences in the cuisine, such as the famous kartacz, a delicious meat, onion and potato filling.
I’d advise cycling the Green Velo Szlak between May and October. Discovering Poland in winter is possible, but it’s tough going and some parts of the route may be rendered impassable by flooding or snow. Poland's bus and rail networks are extremely reliable. To reach Białowieża, favour the bus. Once you reach the city of Elbag, take the train to Gdańsk and, from there, plan the rest of your journey or your return trip.
If you want to complete the whole adventure, I invite you to check out the Collection on the first section, which runs from Końskie to Białowieża: komoot.com/collection/2430326.
All that’s left to say is “Dobrej drogi” (have a safe trip).
