Peaks that touch the clouds, ravines that disappear into the abyss, and leafy pine forests that protect and provide shelter to numerous animal species. Vertical walls, infinite valleys and rivers that create life in their path. These are just some of the jewels of the Sierra Espuña in the Ricote Valley in Spain.
Wine, rain and natural forces have shaped this fascinating corner of Murcia over time. The combination of tectonic activity and erosion has contributed to the formation of the characteristic topography of the mountain range.
This five-day Collection is a loop around the Sierra Espuña regional park. You’ll carry everything with you as you ride 22 to 31 kilometres (13 to 19 mi) and climb over 1,000 metres (3,200 ft). The trails and tracks are in good condition, but some sections are quite exposed and surfaced with loose gravel, so you’ll need to be fit to fully enjoy the route.
The best seasons for this journey are spring and autumn, when the temperatures are pleasant and you can enjoy the colours. Summer is very hot and winter can be quite cold at higher altitudes. Whatever your preference, don't forget to check the weather forecast and pack accordingly.
Wear technical, quick-drying clothing and a windbreaker or waterproof jacket, depending on the weather forecast. Pack a hat, sunscreen, boots with ankle protection and hiking poles to help you cross the most demanding sections.
The route leads through remote mountainous areas, and you may not meet anyone during the day, which means that it is not easy to find supplies either. I’ve included tips on where you can pick up supplies in each stage description. Make sure you bring some emergency high energy snacks. You’ll find fountains, water sources and streams where you can refill your bottles, but bring a filter or purification tablets.
Alhama de Murcia has excellent train and bus connections, or you can opt for alternatives such as car sharing or driving. It’s a very quiet city and you’ll find public parking where you can leave your car.
I hope this adventure leaves you with amazing memories of these Murcian lands. Have a good journey!
