Pilgrimage routes, Holy Blood, pilgrimage signs moulded into church bells and a quiet, contemplative landscape. Sleepy little villages and historic small towns whose churches are visible from afar. The best conditions for a meditative hike on the pilgrimage route between Berlin and Bad Wilsnack, in the northwest of Germany, which between 1383 and 1552 was the destination of the Holy Blood of Wilsnack. Many pilgrims continued on to Tangermünde, where there was a connection to the historic pilgrimage route to Santiago.
People from all over Europe made pilgrimages to Wilsnack after three hosts survived the burning of a church in 1383 unscathed. The priest found the consecrated, blood-stained hosts in the rubble. The bishops of Havelberg recognised the signs and promoted the pilgrimage to the blood hosts in the then completely unknown town of Wilsnack. An incredible movement of pilgrims to the so-called Church of the Holy Blood then occurred, which completely overwhelmed Wilsnack and the towns along the way. Erfurt, on the way from the south, even had to temporarily close its gates to the pilgrims from 1475. The pilgrimage movement came to an abrupt end shortly after the Reformation when Pastor Ellefeld burnt the wafers in 1552.
In this Collection, I present the 237-kilometre (147 mi) route from Berlin to Bad Wilsnack and on to Tangermünde. The 11 stages follow today's interpretation of the mediaeval pilgrimage route, as road maps that could show the historical route did not yet exist. Only the pilgrimage signs moulded into church bells, a recently found pilgrim's grave, the record of a count's pilgrimage and other traces make it possible to reconstruct the route.
Some routes have proved their worth and have been used more and more intensively over the centuries. The route occasionally leads along city streets in Berlin or small country roads. As I’ve sometimes chosen a greener route for the stages of this Collection, incorporated small detours and included public transport stops, the total length is longer than the official 220-kilometre (137 mi) route.
From Berlin-Mitte, you’ll walk 155 kilometres (96 mi) to the Church of the Holy Blood in Bad Wilsnack in a total of seven stages. The first stage is very long at almost 35 kilometres (22 mi) and runs largely through Berlin. If you don't feel like it, I recommend shortening it by starting the Tour at Tegel Harbour, which is easily reached by underground or suburban railway. The route from Bad Wilsnack to Tangermünde is another 85 kilometres (53 mi) and can be completed in four further stages.
You can order a pilgrim's pass here: jakobusgesellschaft-berlin-brandenburg.de (in German). Even if you no longer have to compete with many other pilgrims for a place to sleep and food, I recommend booking your accommodation in advance and researching local shopping facilities. If you only want to walk part of the route, I’ve included a suitable public transport stop in each Tour description. This gives you flexibility and allows you to organise your pilgrimage as you wish, even if some places are very remote and are rarely served by public transport. Keep an eye on the timetables as they are often reduced towards the evening or at the weekend. Be sure to bring weatherproof clothing, sturdy shoes and enough food and drink for your hike.
Now you're ready to set off on this epic pilgrimage.
