The ‘Vallée et gorges de l'Aveyron véloroute’ (Averyon Valley and gorges cycle route) is one of France’s lesser-known weekend cycle routes. It links the towns of Montauban and Léguépie, and follows the course of the Aveyron river for 85 kilometres (53 mi). The route crosses the Quercy region and ends at the gateway to the ancient Rouergue province. As you meander along the river, you’ll experience the contrasting landscapes of the valley against the backdrop of the gorge’s limestone cliffs and deciduous forests.
Between Bruniquel and Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, you cycle across the heart of a Natura 2000 zone. The presence of limestone has led to the formation of a karst landscape, which acts as a refuge for rare and protected flora, and petrifying springs, which are lime-rich water sources. This part of the route has the most positive elevation and includes sections along the cliffs.
The green landscapes interspersed with bastides (fortified towns) bring the history of the ancient Quercy province to life. The castles, narrow medieval streets, ancient thermal baths, and centuries-old churches will delight history lovers. Make sure to stop off in Bruniquel (known as one of the most beautiful villages in France), as well as Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, and Laguépie. Penne, Montricoux, and Féneyrols are smaller, less imposing villages, but just as authentic.
Along the way, you'll find plenty of food and water. Look out for bike-friendly establishments displaying an ‘Accueil Vélo’ label, where you can access services such as recharging the battery of your electric bike. In Montauban, you can hire bikes (including electric bikes) for the weekend at the Maison du vélo.
The route is suitable for mountain bikes and road bikes, as most of the roads are tarmac, although there are a few gravel sections. Don't forget to bring brightly coloured clothing so that you're visible to other road users, and lights for the few tunnels you'll have to pass through. Otherwise, your usual repair kit will suffice.
I recommend doing this route between spring and autumn. If you do decide to do it in the winter, beware of the black ice that can form on the road due to the moisture coming from the river.
This two-stage Collection is easily accessible and therefore ideal for a weekend trip. You can reach the starting point in Montauban by train from Toulouse, Bordeaux, Cahors, Paris, Marseille, and Agen. From your endpoint in Laguépie, you can take the train back to Montauban via Toulouse, or you can travel directly to Figeac or Aurillac.
This Collection is also a great option for cyclists following the Garonne Canal (V80) cycle route (komoot.com/fr-fr/collection/1905171/a-river-adventure-canal-des-deux-mers-by-bike) who would like a break from the hustle and bustle of the canal. To join the Collection, follow the canal from Montech to the starting point in Montauban.
Enjoy your ride!
