My most memorable adventures of 2023

2023 might actually be the year that I ‘adventured’ the least in recent years, and I certainly spent the fewest nights in my tent than I have in a long time.
I’ve been looking back at my most memorable adventures from 2023, and actually I managed to squeeze an awful lot in. Visiting family living in both the Faroe Islands and Colombia (we are rather spread out!) and making the most of a couple of work trips in the Canary Islands and the Alps.

The komoot September Gathering was in the French Alps, so I travelled out a week early to explore the mountains by MTB. On this particular trip I traversed some of the sketchiest trails I’ve ever taken by bike, but it was worth it for the high pass to get from Italy back into Switzerland.

I’m quarter Faroese, and have been visiting the islands semi-regularly my whole life. I haven't been back since my great-grandmother passed away in 2018, and this visit with my family was initially postponed from the pandemic. It was special to be back, and especially to do my favourite walk on the island my family is from: Suðuroy. Hvannhagi on a clear day is simply magic.

My sister lives in Colombia, so I made the trip to visit her this spring - my first time to the country. She lives in Bogota, but met us in Barichara over a long weekend. Together, we walked the well-trodden hike to Guane and then continued along the more adventure route to Villanueva. Loved every minute of it!

On the way back from Colombia, our flight was delayed and we missed our connection in Mexico. As a result we ended up with an unexpected day in Mexico City. Making the most of what was initially a slightly stressful situation, we capitalised on our additional itinerary stopover and explored town. You can see a lot when you really put your mind to it in a day!

My first komoot Gathering was in Lanzarote in January. I travelled out a week early with my partner, excited to make the most of my new remote-work set up and soak up some winter sun at the same time. At the weekend we walked this amazing hike through surreal volcanic landscapes, complete with a wine tasting tour halfway though!
