In 1958, Father Joseph Massie had the brilliant idea of dedicating the chapel of Géou to cycling and its champions. At the end of the 50s, there weren’t any champions to talk about yet.

Three chapels in the world are dedicated to cycling: one in Spain, one in Italy and the last one in France, in Labastide d'Armagnac. This iconic village is located on the border of the Landes and the Gers. To get there, you'll ride through the beautiful rolling roads of the Pays d'Armagnac.

This two-day route starts in Bordeaux and ends in Mont-de-Marsan. It's a short but fun adventure that takes you along small forest trails and an ‘Amazonian’ river and past curious statues and a hidden café-auberge. Spring to autumn are the ideal seasons. The South-Gironde and the Landes are almost flat, so the paths are quite gentle, making for an easy itinerary that’s suitable for everyone.

Along the route, you cross through pine forests and spot many castles. I recommend stopping at Budos Castle and at the one in Villandraut before visiting the chapel dedicated to the Queen.

The highlight of the show is of course the chapel of Géou, also called Notre-Dame-des-Cyclistes. You can visit it all year long, just check the opening hours before you arrive. You can find more information (in French) here: notredamedescyclistes.net/visites.html

To return home from Mont-de-Marsan, you can jump on the first train to Bordeaux, Pau or Bayonne. The train ride is often the best way to anchor the memories you've just created.

A MTB or gravel bike is perfect for this adventure.

It’s easy to find food in shops en route. Accommodation, however, is harder to find. On the first day, I suggest a small detour to Giscos where you can sleep in small huts that belong to a riding school.
