Baden is definitely spoiled by the sun. With an average of 1,700 hours of sunshine a year, the 44 vineyards in the Ortenau grow a variety of red and white grapes to produce some of the best wines in Germany. The multi-award winning red Pinot Noirs and the unique Rieslings, also known as Klingelbergers, are particularly popular here.
But there’s even more on offer for those who enjoy a tipple. Ortenau also has several thousand schnapps distilleries – more than anywhere else in Germany. You can sample some of these along the way at the so-called schnapps fountains. Just give a small tip and treat yourself to a sip of your choice. By the way, non-alcoholic drinks are usually also available to quench your thirst.
A hike on the Ortenau Wine Trail is really enjoyable. Divided into seven relatively short days, you have plenty of time to visit the wineries, castles and fortresses along the way and wander through the picturesque towns and wine villages. The views are fantastic. You can take part in a wine tasting or extend your hike along one of the ‘wine loops’. If you’d like to dive more deeply into Ortenau’s wine culture, book a certified wine guide for specific sections on the trail, which includes a tasting at a vineyard.
You’ll find a range of places to stop for refreshments in the stage descriptions, as well as specially certified hotels and wineries that offer wine tastings. These give you a first taste of what to expect and show you the variety on offer.
You can walk the Ortenau Wine Trail year-round. However, it’s particularly attractive in late spring when the fruit trees blossom and in early autumn when the vines slowly turn golden. At the height of summer, you’ll work up a good sweat in the vineyards, which don’t have much shade. It’s easy to shorten this long-distance hike into fewer stages or to end it early, as there is access to public transport at all stage ends. Due to the comparatively short daily distances, the trail is also suitable for less experienced hikers.
So I wish you an eventful stay in the Ortenau, but remember: the stronger the wine, the weaker your legs!

Forse hai indovinato: sta andando in salita!

Oggi inizia abbastanza rilassato. D'ora in poi va costantemente in salita.
