If you like small roads with little traffic, accessible passes and small villages full of charm, the Drôme by bike is a paradise. This transitional territory between the Vercors and Provence offers magnificent panoramas and even some lavender fields.
Here, I propose a three-day itinerary that’s perfect for a long weekend! The stages are between 90 and 110 kilometres (56 - 68 mi) with 1,600 to 2,200 metres (5,250 to 7,200 ft) of ascent.
If you look at the map, you’ll probably notice that the routes twist and criss-cross; the terrain is particularly suitable for this. You’ll explore small roads that wind over and around the mountains – there are no big, straight valleys here. The advantage of this kind of route is that it’s very easy to cut some routes short if you need to, or to extend it if you still have some energy left in the tank.
If you go with friends who aren’t so fit or, as I did, with parents pulling a kid’s trailer, they can easily find a more direct route and meet you at the end of the day.
The route starts in Crest and ends in Luc-en-Diois, both of which have train stations. You can reach Crest by rail from Valence. It’s easy to return to the start point from your destination, but there are only a few trains per day so check the timetable here: sncf-connect.com.
I’d recommend this route between the beginning of May and the end of September. Outside this period, many places close. Weather-wise, July and August can be very hot in the Drôme, but if you don’t mind high temperatures, then it’ll be fine. If not, you should opt for the beginning or the end of the season.
Each stage ends in a small village where you can find accommodation and food. Hotel, Airbnb or campsite – the choice is yours. Remember to book in advance.
