There are plenty of good reasons to hike with very young children and babies so why not take your baby out into the countryside close to the city in a carrycot or experience their first steps on the forest floor? When your baby reaches for the blades of grass at the first rest stop or when your toddler runs after the grasshoppers and learns first-hand what snails and earthworms are, then everyday life becomes even better. Hand on heart: is there anything better than instilling a love of nature in small children from their very first weeks?
SUITABLE TRAILS FOR THE LITTLE ONES
In this Collection, we've picked out hiking trails that are perfect for young families and that you can do with your new baby or your energetic toddler. The hiking trails are between 2 and 10 kilometres (1.2–6 mi) long and are spread throughout Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. You're guaranteed to find a suitable excursion here, no matter the age of your young ones.
We have made sure that the hikes are mostly on flat paths so that you can be relaxed when carrying your baby in a front carrier or a backpack. There are also trails that you can hike with a pushchair; you can find this information directly in the Tour title. We have made sure that there are plenty of places to rest and change nappies too, and have included cool stops such as game reserves, playgrounds, lakes and farms. Many of the trails are also themed and provide even small children with information about nature, fairytales and animals at playful stations along the route.
For all hikes, you can easily plan your journey by car. There are also some routes that can be reached by train or bus. This is especially the case on the outskirts of larger towns. We have planned all the hikes to be circular, which makes getting there and back a little easier. We have also made sure that you can shorten the hikes if your legs get heavy or the weather changes. Of course, you can always extend them as well.
OUR TIPS FOR HIKING WITH BABIES AND TODDLERS
Hiking with babies and toddlers can be challenging, but roaming through nature and spending hours together in the fresh air is simply priceless. To get you started on the right foot, we have six tips for your outdoor adventure together:
1. Don't plan Tours that are too ambitious, rather venture out slowly as a family and see which route lengths and types suit you well.
2. If you are travelling in summer, it is best to start your Tour in the morning so that you are not out in the midday heat.
3. You don't need any special equipment to feed your baby on the way. If you’re breastfeeding, you don't really need to think about anything else. If you’re using a bottle, it's also very easy. Take enough clean bottles with you, fill small portion jars with the correct amount of powdered milk and fill two thermos flasks with water: one with boiling water and one with cold water. When it’s feeding time, use a small thermometer (a new, clean thermometer works perfectly) to find the right mixture of hot and cold. It's best to practise the mixture at home beforehand, so it’s easier when you’re out hiking. If your little one prefers to eat milk porridge, that's no problem either: instead of bottles, fill small air-tight tubs with the right amount of porridge powder for one meal and pour on water during the snack break. As a snack, you can pack cut fruit and, of course, enough water.
4. Make sure that there are suitable picnic huts, alpine pastures or inns along the way, depending on the weather and season. Apart from that, you don't need any special infrastructure, especially in summer. You don't need to worry about a lack of places to stop, because if you're travelling with a baby, any meadow can become a changing table. Always have a cosy blanket with you.
5. If you have to choose between a pushchair and a carrycot, we recommend a carrycot for most hiking trails. As long as you don't plan to walk around the lake on paved roads, a front carrier is more comfortable and can withstand any unpaved surfaces. For children six months and older, you can use a carrycot or back carrier. You can find out whether a trail is suitable for pushchairs in the Tour heading.
6. For toddlers who can already walk, the following applies: the tours should not be longer than 3 to 5 kilometres (1.8–3 mi), as toddlers will take much longer to walk and you may need frequent stops.
When you’re well prepared, you can get completely immersed in nature and enjoy a wonderful adventure in the countryside with your little ones. We wish you lots of fun – and you’ll see that together with your children, you can get to know nature in a whole new way and collect your first unforgettable memories.
