Rue, Hubert, Dylan and I went out to ride my favorite gravel adventure ride out of Tucson. The ride includes rugged Redington Road, climbing the dirt backside of Mount Lemmon and descending the paved front side. It's good as a 1, 2 or 3 day bikepacking loop. This one is worth traveling for! Resupply is fairly easy for a desert route. There are restaurants and stores at the start-- a shopping mall with Le Buzz Cafe, Safeway supermarket and many other businesses. San Manuel is at mile 50 with a gas station-- a great place to fill up water and get snacks. Five miles down the road is the turn off for Oracle, a short detour with the opportunity to find lodging and food. At Mile 58, Peppersauce Campground is a great place to spend the night. There are spigots and pit toilets. At the top of Mount Lemmon (mile 76), Summerhaven is a quick quarter mile detour off route with a couple of restaurants and a general store. Then, it's nearly all downhill to complete the loop. This route is an equal split of pavement and gravel. The dirt roads tend to be a bit rough. I'd definitely recommend at least a 38mm tire-- it's more fun and comfortable on a 48mm. The loop can be ridden in either direction. I prefer counterclockwise to climb the rough dirt and descend on pavement.
