Meter-high, wood-panelled walls, ornate carpentry and a dining room with chandeliers – perhaps not what you would expect in a mountain hut in the Alps. The Berlin Hut, which was extensively renovated in 1912, is the largest alpine club hut in Tyrol and a wonderful highlight along the Berlin High Trail hike.
The Berlin High Trail leads you 52 miles (85 km) from Finkenberg through the high mountains of the Zillertaler Alps nature park. You will gain around 21,653 feet (6,600 meters) across the eight stages. Along the way, you will explore the magnificent glaciated world of house mountains: dramatic crags, narrow mountain paths, picturesque meadows and rugged peaks will define your adventure. Standing at 10,282 feet (3,134 meters), the impressive Schönbichler Horn is the highest point of the route. The Berlin High Trail is a demanding hike and previous alpine experience will help you enjoy it to the fullest. As there is often a lot of snow at higher altitudes until early summer, July to the end of September is the best period for your adventure.
Each stage begins and ends at a comfortable mountain huts. As these are popular during the summer months, we recommend reserving a place as soon as you have committed to your hike.
You can easily reach the Zillertal Alpine region by train. From Jenbach station, on the edge of the Zillertal, you can hop on a train or bus to the mountains. The Christophorus Line’s 4104 bus runs between the start and finishing points in Finkenberg and Mayrhofen.
The Berlin High Trail is one of the six most beautiful long-distance hiking trails in Tyrol, the so-called ‘Great Walks’. All routes promise you three things: escape from your everyday, beautiful alpine landscapes and real adventure. As well as the Berlin High Trail, the Tyrolean hiking trail elites include the Lechtal Mountain Trail, the Stubai High Trail, the Eagle Way, and the Inntal High Trail.
