Crystal clear lakes, sparkling gorges and roaring rivers: the Zugspitz Region in Bavaria is an absolute water paradise! Surrounding the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain at 9,718 feet (2,962 m), is a huge water playground for both young and old, inviting you to explore, swim and refresh. The whole region is perfect for those sweltering summer days when you long for fun in the cold, glacial water during your hiking adventures.
In this Collection, we present the ten most beautiful Tours around the Zugspitze. Here, many designated hiking trails lead directly along the water. Adventures into a gorge are always exciting and we have four on offer here. The Partnach, Leutasch, Hammersbach and Schleifmühlenlaine streams have carved deep into the rock for millenia and form absolutely spectacular gorges. The most challenging route leads through the Höllentalklamm, which opens its gates at 3,435 feet (1,047 m) above the Zugspitz village of Grainau. It’s an unforgettable hike along narrow paths that press against the vertiginous rock walls, through half-open tunnels and over narrow bridges - with the roaring stream always below and beside you.
Another natural spectacle you discover is the Kuhflucht waterfalls, which cascade 886 feet (270 m) into the valley over three immense steps. With the Eibsee, Pflegersee, Soiernsee, Grubsee and many others, you will also find a variety of lakes for a wild swim. Some of them score points with comfortable sunbathing lawns and turquoise water, while all offer bucket loads of fun.
On most of these Tours, you can combine hiking with swimming, or enjoy a picnic by the water. This is what makes a walking holiday in the Zugspitz region so varied. It’s up to you whether you take things easy or ramp the adrenaline up a notch, making it perfect for a trip with family or friends!
To make your walking holiday a roaring success, we have a few tips for you on how to be mindful in the natural environment. We thank you for a considerate approach to the trails and caution you to avoid unnecessary risk by staying on the marked trails and paying close attention to designated protected areas.
