The Ice Age Valleys Cycle Route leads through the middle of the Caves and Ice Age Art in the Swabian Jura UNESCO World Heritage Site. It winds through the unspoiled nature and picturesque of the Arch and Lone valleys. Here, you discover ancient caves where humans once created important artworks from mammoth ivory.
The 75-kilometre (46.6 mi) Ice Age Valley Cycle Path leads from the town of Schelklingen to Niederstotzingen. In this Collection, we guide you along the route in two stages. You can also complete it in one day, especially if you are travelling with an e-bike. There are charging stations in Blaubeuren, Ulm and the Vogelherd Archaeopark.
Schelklingen, the starting point, is easy to reach by train from Ulm, Munderkingen and Münsingen. After cycling 30 kilometres (18.6 mi), you arrive at the town of Ulm where you find a wide choice of accommodation, places to stop for a bite to eat, and a station with long-distance rail connections. On the second stage, you ride just over 45 kilometres (28 mi), ending in Niederstotzingen. From here, you can catch a regional train in the direction of Ulm or Aalen.
The Ice Age Valleys Cycle Route has lots of exciting places to visit such as the Achtal Valley. Here, you can explore the Hohle Fels, Sirgenstein and Geißenklösterle caves. The unique items discovered in these caves are of worldwide importance and you can see them at the Museum of Prehistory in Blaubeuren and in the Museum in Ulm. In the Lone Valley, you explore the Bockstein and Hohlenstein-Stadel caves as well as the Vogelherd Archaeopark. Here, you can immerse yourself how everyday life would have been during the Stone Age at the themed sites and experience world heritage for yourself.
