A highlight for lovers and many others. I have been there many times, but the images with the lift in operation totally fascinate me. With bike you can also approach the upper point. You do not have to climb the stairs, but you have to take the slope.

The construction of the world's largest double-vertical boat lift Lüneburg Scharnebeck was built in 1974 and offers a worth seeing technical spectacle. The ship lift offers modern cargo ships the opportunity to overcome a height of 38 meters. The lift's design lasted for decades.

In order to create a connection between the Elbe (Artlenburg) and Mittellandkanal (Wolfsburg), engineers built the Elbe side canal in eight years of construction. On the entire stretch of the Elbe side channel a height difference of 61 meters is overcome. Of these, the Uelzen lock bridges 23 meters and the remaining 38 meters the Scharnebeck ship lift.

    Ship lift Scharnebeck
The Lüneburg ship lift in Scharnebeck is the largest ship lift in Germany - an impressive structure. When it was completed in December 1975, it was the world's largest double-elevation ship lift. In two troughs filled with water, ships sailing on the Elbe side canal are lifted by the Elbmarsch 38 meters higher into the geest landscape of the Lüneburg Heath, as in a gigantic elevator. The mere journey time of a trough takes three minutes, from the entrance to the exit a ship is 20 minutes on the way.

I'm not a technology freak, but the ships are carried up or down at an unbelievable pace like in an elevator. You should have seen it.

The Lüneburg ship lift belongs to the northern of the two channel stages of the Elbe-Seitenkanal federal waterway, which is managed by the Uelzen Water and Shipping Authority. The Elbe side canal connects the Elbe at Artlenburg with the Mittelland canal at Edesbüttel west of Wolfsburg. The lift was built in 1974 as the world's largest at the foot of the Geestrand to Elbmarsch in Scharnebeck, northeast of Lüneburg and nine kilometers south of the Elbe. The first ship passed the ship lift with the partial release of the channel between the Elbe and the port of Lüneburg on 5 December 1975.

It is easy to visit by several promenades and in connection with the nearby museum a popular destination. Every year about 500,000 visitors visit the lift.

Max. Height of fall between upper water and underwater 36-38 m (there are different indications).

Last hint: The road from Scharnebeck to Erbstorf goes under the canal. The canal crosses the street like a bridge. The second tunnel is at Lüneburg Ebensberg on the way to Neu Lentenau direction Nutzfelde.

The route goes straight, but you have a wide view over the countryside. It does not matter which side you take. Most of the time I drive up the canal on the left if I want to go to the Elbe near Hohnstorf.

On this Geesthang an "elevator" for the inland vessels was necessary. The result is a technical masterpiece. You can admire it from a park, which is located next to the building. From here, a path leads directly into the information center. It is very impressive to stand directly below the troughs on the underpass. Those who have time now experience how the troughs with inland vessels are driven up or down in front of their eyes. An open elevator chair, full of water, so that the ship can swim. Impressive!

Here, inland waterways can be lifted. 38 meters go up. At its construction time, the largest ship lift in the world, today so small that one thinks about an extension through a lock.
