On the northern edge of the fish market in Erfurt you will find the "Haus zum Breiten Herd", one of the most important Renaissance houses in Erfurt. In 1882, the façade was renewed and lush neo-Renaissance details added. Both façade styles unite at the "Haus zum Breiten Herd" to a successful symbiosis, which is one of the most beautiful of its kind in Germany.

The town hall, whose origins date back to the 11th century, is located directly on the fish market. The town hall was first mentioned in 1275 and was considered the political centerpiece of the medieval metropolis in Erfurt. Today, the seat of the city administration is located in the neo-gothic building.

The original site of the Roman statue was in front of the house to the Breiter Herd. By construction of the tram, the statue was relocated in 1886. The warlike armored statue was given a similar meaning as a Roland, which is considered a symbol of city rights, which is why it was increasingly referred to as "Roland".

The fish market is the center of the city. Here stands the neo-Gothic town hall (1870-75), which was built in place of the Gothic predecessor building and decorated in its interior by numerous murals to the Thuringian history and legend.
Important houses of rich Waidhändlern give the place a special charm. The No. 7, in which there is an art gallery, is the house "To the Red Ox" (1562). The figure frieze above the ground floor depicts the days of the week and the Greek muses. Much more modest is the house no. 6 "To the Golden Crown", which housed the Posthalterei from 1615 onwards. On the north side of the fish market is the magnificent Renaissance facade of the house "To the broad hearth" (1584).
[Statue of Saint Martin as Roman Warrior] The parapet panels above the ground floor represent the five senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, feeling (viewed from left to right). This frieze continues at the Gildehaus (1892-92) with the representation of the four main virtues: justice, prudence, courage and moderation.

The standing figure in the middle of the square is often a source of confusion. Since Erfurt was never free imperial city, no Roland could be set up.
The Dutch sculptor Israel of the Milla created in 1591 in the city commission the figure of a warrior with the insignia of the Roman Republick.
The independence drive of the Council and the citizens is expressed in this unusual presentation. The "man on the pillar" stands at the place where for a long time was a representation of Saint Martin, patron saint of the city.

At the fish market there is a lot of history to learn on the one hand - in the town hall itself and when the city guides explain to tourists the importance of the individual frescoes you will always find something new. And in the Kunsthaus vis a vis there are always changing exhibitions. Otherwise, the place is gastronomic in Italian hands and who likes it more comfortable now should turn into the small side streets

The Kunsthalle Erfurt is located in the old town of Erfurt, at the fish market in the Haus zum Roten Ochsen. Here is also the seat of the Erfurt Kunstverein.
After a long and elaborate restoration and modernization of the technical installations, the Kunsthalle Erfurt was inaugurated in 1979 as a gallery and exhibition venue.
Today, the Kunsthalle Erfurt has an exhibition area of 750 square meters, which it uses for constantly changing exhibitions of visual art - thematically from the beginning of modernity to the present day (Wikipedia).
