Winkelsmühle - first mentioned in 1531. By ducal decree the farmers were obliged to grind their grain here. Completely destroyed in the course of the "30 years war". After the reconstruction, it was later (early 19th century) with its leisure facilities to one of the most popular destinations in the Bergisches Land. In 1971, a fire severely damaged her. With the help of the state, the Zweckverband "Neandertal recreation area" rebuilt the Winkelsmühle.
In 1922, the last mill wheel had to be removed because it was badly damaged. In order to continue to supply the mill residents with electricity, a turbine was used at that time.
In 1976, instead, a mill wheel (wood-iron - 36 spruce boards) was installed again. Furthermore, a hydraulic weir system was installed, which regulates the water level of the ponds around the Düssel.
After this mill wheel and the weir had been destroyed by a tree, the current water wheel made of steel was installed in 1998.
The weir was renewed in 2000. The current water wheel at the Winkelsmühle is used again to generate electricity.

The quaint Winkelsmühle is a flour mill, which was first mentioned in 1531 in a document. The water wheel of today is made of steel, it was installed in 1998. Instead of grinding grain, it generates electricity for the residents of the Winkelsmühle. Although the mill itself can not be visited, it invites you to linger. The pretty half-timbered building, the brook that splashes over the mill wheel, the grassy valley floor - a mill as if from a picture book.

The grounds around the mill and the mill itself are privately owned and can not be visited or visited. A "visit" is only possible from the bridge and from the paths between the buildings. Nevertheless, the facility is worth a visit: The owners go out of their way to scrub the whole estate very well.

Update on the angle mill:
With immediate effect (June 14th, 2020) it is no longer possible to pass through the private property at the Winkelsmühle! This means that the hiking trail through the Neandertal is blocked there. The path was "removed" at the instigation of the property owner.

Angle mill
In 1387 in the list of tithe levies
The history of the Winkelsmühle has always been changeable.
First mentioned in a document in 1387 in the list of tithe levies to the Kaiserswerth monastery, the residential building is said to have burned down during the chaos of war and the barn to collapse 300 years later.
In the 1970s, "the building, which was absolutely ripe for demolition and additionally destroyed by a roof fire," came under the spotlight of the Neandertal Association.
After all, the idyllic mill with swimming pool and the terrace cafe was a popular destination.
It has been extensively restored and converted for residential purposes.
The owners are currently arguing with the Mettmann district about right of way.

Nice old mill ensemble that is privately owned today. Nice that you can still walk through here. Hopefully, all hikers will take the consideration that the inhabitants ask for according to the attached signs, it would be desirable.

Recycled as a flower pot. The lore could not have imagined that when she was driving through the mine. 🙈

"In the valley we follow the course of the Düssel with muddy shoes, past the picturesque Winkelsmühle, which we know from our childhood days, but which we haven't seen for a long time."
