The village church in Hämerten is a characteristic for the Altmark Romanesque field stone construction. The tower is not, as usual, on the west side, but on the east side. It therefore belongs to the 7 "wrong" churches of the Altmark. The church from the 13th century is the oldest and at the same time most attractive choral tower church in the old march region.

The Hämerten church is a choir tower church, popularly known as the "wrong church". The church is built in all outer walls and large fieldstones that are also hewn up to the top of the tower. The wall thickness of the surrounding walls is more than 1 m, at the transition from the choir to the nave even 2 m. Bricks are only used on the window and for flanges. The wall thickness in connection with the small, high set windows and small doors indicate the function as a fortified church. The roof truss is one of the most important relics of medieval carpentry in Germany and is the oldest German surviving rod construction. The oak wood from which the roof structure was built dates back to 1191.
