The Brodtener Steilufer is an active cliff, which stretches over a length of four kilometers between Travemünde and Niendorf. The cycling and hiking trail above the cliffs is ideal for relaxing walks.

The hiking and cycling path runs along the edge above the cliffs. The historic Hermannshöhe restaurant, originally built before the First World War, was replaced by a new building in May 2012. The parking lot, which is popular with hikers and day trippers, is now closed by a barrier system and there is a charge to use it.
On the way between the Brodtener Ufer and Travemünde there are two memorial stones: the older stone shows a Bible verse (Ps 93.4 LUT), the younger one serves as a memorial for buried at sea. The latter had to be moved inland in the meantime due to the steep bank breaking off and was also rotated so that the inscription now faces the sea.
Access from the hiking trail to the beach is only permitted in Niendorf / Ostsee, Travemünde and from the stairs near the Seeblick youth center north of Brodten. Otherwise, the ascent and descent on the cliffs and stepping onto the strip at the edge of the breakoff are life-threatening.
On the beach on the Brodtener Ufer - which is sometimes quite stony - you can swim and look for fossils, but access is sometimes hindered by bank breaks after storms. There are diving areas in front of the Brodtener Ufer, but ammunition was sunk off the coast - near the Brodtener Reef - after the end of the Second World War.
Large parts of the Brodtener Ufer are under nature protection (European bird sanctuary). Since the living conditions on steep banks are unique and form an irreplaceable landscape element for numerous animal and plant species, the steep slopes must not be artificially secured.
On the steep bank there is one of the largest sand martin colonies in Europe with around 2600 breeding tunnels.

The Brodtener steep bank is an approximately 4 km long coastal strip on the Bay of Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein, which is bounded by the Baltic Sea Niendorf (municipality Timmendorfer beach) and the Baltic Sea resort of Travemünde Lübeck.

The hiking trail that runs there is part of the approximately 7,980 km of the Baltic Coast Cycle Route (EV10), the Hansa Route. This international cycle route leads around completely around the Baltic Sea.

The rugged, sometimes towering cliff of the steep bank has z.T. bizarrely shaped slopes. In the Middle Ages beach pirates drove here mischief by lighting beacons to lure ships on the offshore sandbars and plunder. From the 19th century, the summer guests of the up-and-coming spa discovered the Hermannshöhe as an ideal destination.

There are two ways to explore the Brodtener shore. The trail above the Brodtener steep bank is easily accessible, suitable for cyclists and offers panoramic views of the sea and the Schleswig-Holstein hill country.
The Strandweg below the steep bank, right on the surf, is harder to walk through the banks of the river, fallen trees, driftwood, flotsam, seaweed, shells and stones. The only staircase is located near the youth house Seeblick (Wieskoppel / Brodten), about 1 km from the Baltic Sea resort Niendorf.

Particularly impressive is the active cliff in the north of the steep bank: Even today, the sea eats every year by an average of one meter into the country.

As a European bird sanctuary large parts of the Brodtener steep bank and the approximately 20 km2 large shallow water zone are indicated in front of the steep bank. The area is of international importance as a resting and wintering area for migratory or overwintering waterfowl. The shore accommodates with up to 2600 Brhröhren the largest bank swallow colony Schleswig-Holstein.

The sea area has been a popular fishing destination for centuries. The fishing boats usually come from the authentically preserved fishing village Gothmund or the Niendorf harbor, 4km west.

The agricultural hinterland, called Brodtener Winkel, has a large variety of landscape structures and species of plants and animals worthy of protection. The only still undeveloped coastal section of the Lübeck Bay in Schleswig-Holsteiner side is completely under protection of the landscape.

Beautiful coastline & accordingly well visited. Shortly in front of the Jugendhaus Seeblick, a steep wooden staircase leads down to the beach.

The cliff is one of the most active on the German Baltic coast. That is why the GeoPark Nordic Stone Kingdom also organizes regular excursions into the world of rocks here. So also on Friday at 16:00.

On the water you can find fossils, petrified sea urchins and thunderbolts. Best after an easterly storm.

Beautiful path along the cliffs with 1A nature. Swallows have their caves in the cliffs and can be well observed. Gastronomic recommendation is the newly built beach club with great outdoor dining.
