Here, too, is one of those oddly shaped rock castles that are so often found in the Fichtelgebirge. On the highest of these leads a staircase that allows a clear view on the clearest days to Weißenstädter See.

On the 866 m high Rudolfstein, a protected natural monument, was once a hilltop castle. Today it is another great vantage point for day trippers and mountain trail hikers.

Probably the best-known rock formation on Rudolfstein are the so-called "Drei Brüder", a group of granite towers which can be found a bit further south from the actual Rudolfstein.

Absolutely brilliant view of the Fichtelgebirge and Weißenstadt - u.a. also nice view of the Schneeberg. The Schneeberg is still very far away from this viewing platform, but only about 45-60 min. (definitely worth it).

Climbers and locals always put up a cairn with every approach to the Rudolfstein. And if no one knocks them down again, at the end of summer there can be between 50 and 100 cairns lining this path.

In 857, Count Palatinate Rudolf, from whom the mountain got its name, is said to have built the first fortification in the North Valley, which is not documented. Lively tin mining once took place on the northern slope.
The first documentary mention of a castle, the “Rudolfstein Castle”, dates back to 1317, when Count Berthold von Henneberg received the castle and the associated places, including Weißenkirchens (Weißenstadt), as an imperial loan (see also: Hennebergisches Lehenverzeichnis). He mortgaged the brothers Heinrich, Friedrich, Arnold, Eberhard and Haymann von Hirschberg with the goods. The Hirschbergers were attacked in the neighboring areas of the Waldsassen monastery, after which the castle was stormed and destroyed.

These rock formation (s) are simply spectacular, an absolute "must" in the Fichtelgebirge, even if they are not on the main routes. Between the individual rock formations are numerous trails, on which you can roam around.
