The barrage in Geesthacht consists of weir system, lock and two fish ascents. It is the only weir in the German part of the Elbe. It was intended to counteract the increasing erosion in the middle Elbe and to improve navigability on the Upper Elbe as well as the national cultural conditions above the barrage. Because the lower Elbe was deepened several times for the ships sailing to Hamburg. The pumped storage power plant Geesthacht is located at the headwaters of the barrage and uses the Elbe as a sub-basin. A planned next to the weir hydroelectric power plant has not been built, because an economic energy production at the required lower storage heights could not be realized. The sectoral police commissioned in 1960 has four openings, each 50 meters wide. The water drainage is controlled by sector flaps. These hydrodynamically shaped steel hollow bodies are sunk into chambers in the weir foundation to drain or lift more water to achieve the 4.00 m jam target. The ships pass the barrage via a lock with two parallel chambers. Two fish passages increase the permeability for aquatic organisms: The plant, built in 1998, is 216 meters long; the more sophisticated 2010 fish pass on the north shore is 550 meters long.

With a useful length of 250 meters and a width of 25 meters, the Geesthachter lock was built in 1957 to ensure a uniform draft between the Lower and Upper Elbe. So that the larger ships can pass between the Lower and Upper Elbe, the Lower Elbe was dredged to a depth of 12 meters. However, the water level of the upper Elbe was not allowed to be too shallow and the water table of the Elbmarsch did not sink.
Since then, the lock with the sluice channel of shipping has made it possible to overcome the gradient created by the weir. The barrage lifts the Elbe mirror up to two meters above the previous mean water level.
From the Elbe bridge you have an excellent view of the busy traffic and the impressive technology of the lock. Not far from the lock is the barrage with the largest fish ladder in Europe. Here, too, you have a good overview of the Elbe bridge.
The lock is part of the technical tour along with other technical attractions. With your bike, you can embark on an exciting discovery tour of the Geesthacht technical and industrial attractions.

The barrage of Geesthacht is impressive. On the southern bank of the Elbe is the old fish ladder, but it was not suitable for larger fish. As an ecological compensation measure for the Moorburg power plant, Vattenfall built Europe's largest fish ladder in 2010 on the north side, next to the lock. This is very successful and it is hoped that the Atlantic disturbance, in addition to salmon and eel, can settle again in the Elbe. The weir also serves to regulate the river. The tides are effective up to here, but not in the upper reaches anymore.Source:
