Borderless cycling at St. Andrä am Zicksee – history, wildlife & lakes

St. Andrä am Zicksee is a holiday paradise for both nature lovers and cyclists. In this Collection, we present four wonderful day rides that are steeped in history and magnificent landscapes around Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland in Austria and the Hungarian lowlands.

There is a lot to discover around Lake Neusiedl such as the Seewinkel National Park on the shore of the salt lakes and far-reaching history and culture. Numerous buildings and monuments tell the story of the Iron Curtain which separated Europe along the Austrian-Hungarian border during the Cold War.

The town of St. Andrä am Zicksee is an ideal starting point for your rides in the Pannonian Lowlands. Located between the idyllic lake and the wide steppe, you can find plenty of accommodation here such as a campsite on the shore of Lake Zicksee. Although the routes start a little way away from the village, you can easily reach them by public transport or bike from St. Andrä.

All routes can be completed within a day and some of the shorter ones are suitable for the whole family. You can also easily shorten the routes or combine them together to suit you – just take a look at the map. A particular highlight is the Iron Curtain Trail which follows the Austrian-Hungarian border for almost 186 miles (300 km). In this Collection, we’ve outlined the route in one go so you can choose how to split it into stages. We also included some tips on which sections are suitable for day trips in the stage description.

Top tip for nature lovers: You can spot many rare animals that live around Lake Zicksee from the cycle paths. Hobby ornithologists can look out for many bird species such as Siberian greyland geese and the hoopoe. On the lakeside, you can take a detour to meet the curious and friendly gophers. With a little patience, these small rodents will come right up to you if you bring a piece of fruit.
