You stand by a gushing waterfall on a hot day, the mist cooling your face; You contemplate life overlooking the calm waters of a lake; You lose yourself in nature hiking along a river. You can experience all this and more on the WasserWeltenStieg Trail through the Black Forest in Germany.

In this Collection, we present the 70-mile (110-km) route from Triberg in Germany to Neuhausen in Switzerland in 6 stages. On the way, you’ll explore the south of the Black Forest and the Randen plateau, as well as countless waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. Opening in July 2020, this trail is brand new so it offers something even for seasoned Black Forest hikers.

The WasserWeltenSteig trail begins at the Triberg waterfalls, one of the highest waterfalls in Germany. From here, you hike over gentle ridges, enjoy wonderful views of the Black Forest, run along the watershed between the Rhine and Danube and get to know the water-dominated landscape in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. Beautiful forest trails, the exciting Gauchach Gorge, idyllic lakes, and, of course, the magnificent Black Forest await. Dotted along the trail, you will find observation towers that afford spectacular views all the way from the Alps to the Swabian Jura. The fifth stage takes you into Switzerland where you hike over the Randen high plateau before reaching Neuhausen, a small town in Schaffhausen. On stage 6, you reach the impressive Rhine Falls, the crowning glory of the WasserWeltenSteig Trail. This huge waterfall is the biggest in Europe and the perfect end to your adventure.

You can easily reach the starting point in Triberg by train and Neuhausen am Rheinfall also has good train connections to return home after your hike. Each stage destination offers accommodation, but it’s worth booking in advance as this region is very popular with hikers. You’ll find lots of restaurants en route where you can try out the local cuisine. Don’t forget to pack your bathing suit as you can take a dip in Lake Kirnberg and relax on the beach on stage 3.
