Picturesque mountain landscapes, wonderful views and cozy huts – the Rofan Mountains are a dreamlike place. This four-day circular hike takes you to the most beautiful spots in the mountain region. Along the 25 mile route (almost 40 km), you will experience the tranquility and uniqueness of the Rofan region as you climb the Vordere Sonnwendjoch, Rofanspitze and the Hochiss peaks, enjoying fantastic views. The deep blue Tyrolean Lake Achen emerges time and again in the valley below.
The Rofan circuit starts in Maurach am Achensee, a pretty town in the Brandenberger Alps.
While the first and last days of the route are quite relaxed, days two and three are tough. Alpine experience, sure-footedness, a head for heights and good preparation are therefore prerequisites for these stages. On the second day there are two alternative routes: you can choose between a more demanding summit tour or a relaxed pleasure hike. A magnificent landscape with great views awaits you on both routes.
Each stage ends at a cozy mountain hut where you can tuck into regional delicacies and enjoy the sunset on the mountain after an exciting day hiking. It is best to reserve your overnight stays in advance to guarantee yourself a place as the huts fill up quickly during the summer season.
The Rofan Mountains are also very popular with climbers that have welcomed mountaineering legends such as Mathias ‘Hias’ Rebitsch and Peter Habeler. Hias Rebitsch and his colleague Sepp Spiegl were the first to climb the difficult eastern face of the Rofanspitze. If climbing is your thing, you can extend your hike to include a day of climbing. There are routes of all levels of difficulty in the area.
There are also other great day hikes around Lake Achen. Here you can find inspiration: komoot.de/collection/848/grandiose-aussichten-klettersteige-wanderwege-am-tiroler-achensee. Would you prefer to go on a multi-day tour? Then the three-day Karwendel circuit is a great addition to your hiking holiday at Lake Achen: komoot.de/collection/898398.
