Töddenland cycle path — on the trail of the wandering merchants

On the Töddenland cycle path you can experience the history of the wandering merchants of the former county of Lingen, which today consists of the Tecklenburger Land and the Southern Emsland. On the circuit you cycle through a picturesque field and meadow landscape, past beech and mixed forests, idyllic nature reserves and through enchanted moors. From small hills you can enjoy magnificent views and in the villages and towns along the way you can immerse yourself in the history of the Tödden.

The Töddenland cycle path, awarded three stars by the ADFC, takes you on a 122 kilometre circuit through the historic "Töddenland" in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. On the cycle path through the Tecklenburger Land and the Southern Emsland, which together form the Töddenland, you will follow in the footsteps of the Tödden. They were wandering merchants, who since the 17th century mainly traded in textiles and thus achieved great prosperity. In places such as Hopsten, Recke and Mettingen you will find numerous references to the Tödden, such as old houses, museums or monuments. You can also learn about the history of the merchants and their trade routes on information boards along the way.

In this collection we show you how to cycle the Töddenland Cycle Route in three stages. To make it easy for you to arrive by train, we'll start the tour in Ibbenbüren. The station is served by trains from Rheine, Bielefeld and Braunschweig, for example. From there you cycle clockwise through Töddenland. In all stage destinations there are different accommodations to spend the night. Cozy cafés and restaurants in the villages or along the route will take care of your physical well-being. If you are self-sufficient, there are also great places for you to take a break at regular intervals. Along the Töddenland cycle path there are many huts, which are comfortably furnished with benches and some with tables. So every cyclist who wants to follow in the footsteps of the wandering merchants has his fun - no matter if pleasure cyclist or adventure cyclist.
