Cycling through the Ruhr region is like window shopping; there's a little surprise waiting around every corner. Something old, something big, something rusty – something exciting with a great story. Or, something green, beautiful and natural. Hardly any region in Germany offers such diverse sights as the Ruhr region. It’s a pandora’s box of industrial culture. These Tours are like a treasure map to help you explore the region. I worked out three 100-kilometre (62 mi) rides with different themes so you won’t get bored. It’s up to you whether you take your time to explore, fly past them or take it easy.

Each Tour has a different theme: I start with the most beautiful old towns in the Ruhr area, with a wonderful combination of urban life, culture and culinary stops. I’m always amazed at how beautiful the towns are in the Ruhr area. It’s easy to imagine how idyllic it would once have been here.

The second Tour leads almost exclusively along railroad tracks, the green ‘backyards’ of the Ruhr region and historical remnants of coal mining that are beautifully peaceful today. Far away from any stressful traffic, you cycle through a piece of industrial history.

On the third Tour, things get wet (and fun). You follow the Ruhr River, ride along beautiful reservoirs, streams and canals, and discover Dortmund harbour. The Ruhr region has a lot of water to enjoy and what better way to explore it than by bike.

It’s up to you where you start the Tours. I’d recommend setting off from Hattingen or Bochum as they’re easy to reach with public transport.

These Tours are incredibly peaceful, but also great for racing bikes. I’ve ridden every loop on my road bike, but I’m also aware that the gravel and potholes might be a bit too much for many road cyclists. That’s why I’ve marked the Tours as gravel routes. However, the rides have too much asphalt to be truly classified as gravel. I’ve avoided federal highways as much as possible, instead leading you over quiet country roads, bike paths and gravel sections. At around 100 kilometres (62 mi), the distance is ideal for a day Tour. It’s a challenge for beginners, but experienced cyclists can complete the routes in a few hours. If it gets too much for you, you can always hop on a train. In the Ruhr area, a station is never far away.

So, check out the information in the stage descriptions and have fun!
