Mallorca, thousands of people are drawn to the picturesque sandy beaches, the cozy towns and the famous bars and clubs. Apart from sky-rise hotels and crowded beaches, however, Spain's largest Mediterranean island offers coastal hiking paths, towering summits—and picturesque mountain landscapes.
The Serra Tramuntana, named after the sometimes fierce north and west winds, rise above the west coast to an altitude of over 4,000 feet (1,300 meters). On the steep slopes of the grey peaks, you will find countless terraces where oranges, lemons and olives are still cultivated, while countless hiking trails lead you through the valleys, gorges and up to the highest peaks.
More than 50 peaks of the Tramuntana mountain range are over 3,200 feet (1,000 meters) high. To their summits, you'll find unspoiled hiking trails and steep climbs, the likes that even experienced Alpinists will be thrilled to hike on. Thanks to Mallorca's mild climate, the island is also an attractive hiking destination whenever you visit, with the highest peaks still being accessible in winter. And once you're up there, the views are spectacular: You'll be able to see right across Mallorca's central plain, over to the coastlines and to the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea.
While Mallorca is famous for being a top summer destination, these hikes are especially exciting in winter. Perhaps unexpectedly, at these heights, snow commonly falls—something that turns these mountainous walks into real outdoor adventures. And once you summit—when the fresh Tramuntana wind whistles around your ears—you will experience a breathtaking panoramic view of the island that few ever experience.
To help you experience the most challenging hikes and beautiful coastal trails on your visit, we have selected seven routes for you. These hikes are especially beautiful during the off-season as, at this time of year, you'll truly be able to experience real solitude and enjoy the Mallorcan landscape at its most undisturbed.
