I discovered the Monts d'Arrée before I even went there. It was through the song ‘Là-bas dans les Monts d'Arrée’ by the Breton storyteller Patrick Ewen that my curiosity was piqued. I went there to see if the lyrics on the album ‘Berceuses pour les vieux enfants’ were true to life.
I wasn’t disappointed: this is indeed a pioneer country, a place apart in Brittany. These ancient mountains, which were part of the Hercynian chain, are now heavily eroded and the remnants of these peaks, some of which were higher than Everest, now form a succession of small mountains in the centre of the Armorican peninsula. The peaks are surrounded by heather and gorse moors, bogs, lakes, dense forests and beautiful deep valleys with granite rocks and clear rivers.
This is an isolated area, rough and wild, and full of stories and legends to make you shudder. This part of the Armorican Regional Nature Park is sparsely populated and Breton is spoken more here than anywhere else. The cultural heritage stands proud in the numerous festivals and events, as well as the living language.
This Collection takes you along the mysterious paths of an ancient Brittany. It shows you a welcoming face made of patchwork countryside dotted with small towns and villages built with the local granite and slate.
The cultural and architectural aspect is retained on this GR 380. You’ll discover an incredible and unique religious heritage, with the notable churches of Guimiliau and Lampaul-Guimiliau – true sculptural masterpieces. An interpretation centre has been created to better understand them.
The murals, born of the street art craze, can be found all over the villages around the Bay of Morlaix, and in Morlaix itself. They bring an unexpected touch of modernity to this 11-stage, 240-kilometre (150 mi) adventure.
This route is suitable for everyone and can easily be shortened by one or two stages if some days seem long. This is water country, so it's important not to forget your rain gear and waterproof hiking boots before venturing out on its trails.
Winter is generally not too harsh in Brittany, so you can walk the paths all year round. However, many sites of interest are closed during this period and it’s better to go during the other seasons.
I particularly like to walk in this regional nature park during summer because the ocean is nearby, so you always have a nice breeze to cool you down. However, don't forget that Brittany has a saying: ‘you can see all the seasons in one day’.
This itinerary forms a loop from Morlaix. The town is well served by the SNCF. Arriving by train or bus in Morlaix is the best way to start this walk.
The region is not to be outdone in terms of gastronomy. In addition to the traditional crêpes, galettes, cider, and Kouign-amann cake, don't forget to taste the Chouchen and other Kig a Farz, as well as look out for the numerous local beers.
Enjoy!

Come la foresta di Brocéliande, la foresta di Huelgoat è ricca di leggende e luoghi che ispirano rispetto, pur liberando un certo mistero.
