You don't have to travel all the way to Provence at the end of June to see the beautiful lavender fields. At about the same time, you can discover the extraordinary indigo blue flax fields that colour the lush Normandy region instead as this French region is the world's largest producer of flax.
The plant needs a mild, humid climate to grow in the best conditions and Normandy fulfils these criteria perfectly.
During the Middle Ages, linen was one of the main raw materials used to make clothes and fabrics. Its production today meets the same requirements and know-how as it did 500 or 600 years ago. The only difference is that mechanisation and industrialisation have occurred in the meantime.
Once the plant has reached maturity, it’s pulled up and dried in the field. This process, known as ‘retting’, uses sun, wind and rain and can last between two weeks and three months. This natural phenomenon is crucial and requires great patience. Scutching, combing, spinning, weaving and knitting are the next steps in the processing of linen in the factory.
This Collection takes you on a journey of about 80 kilometres (50 mi) and consists of one or two days on the flax paths.
You follow a former railway line that has been converted into a greenway in the heart of Normandy. The route runs from Dieppe to Fécamp, but you can just as easily ride in the opposite direction; both towns are well served by Regional Express Trains, or TER. You can travel with your bike on these trains too.
The route is very short, without any notable challenges, making it accessible to everyone. The road is perfectly paved and connected at the beginning and end of the route with the Vélomaritime (Eurovélo 4), which you can use too.
Accommodation and food are well provided and you’ll have no difficulty in finding what suits you in this area. You can stop off in Dieppe, Fécamp or any of the other small towns along this route.
Normandy can be explored all year round because of its mild climate, but you should always choose the summer period if you want to avoid the rain. There’s no shortage of natural and architectural sights on the Linen Cycle Route. The sea air will keep you refreshed as you pedal.
